Sport and Gaming Groups Overview

Sport and gaming groups provide opportunities for students to have fun socializing with peers and meeting new people, while sharpening physical and mental skills. Friendly competition in sport and gaming groups allows for development of life-long social emotional skills such as sportsmanship, teamwork, self-discipline, handling adversity, persistence, and impulse control.

Chess Club

The aim of the Chess Club is to build an outlet for Yorktown students to learn and practice the oldest strategy game in the world. Chess is a logic game that develops skills such as evaluation, tactics and problem solving.  Members teach chess skills by explaining chess strategy and playing big mock games. We will use chess.com and a Microsoft teams classroom to lecture and go into breakout rooms.

Ultimate Frisbee

Yorktown will sponsor a modified intramural ultimate frisbee opportunity beginning the week of March 15.  All YHS students are welcome.  Please check out this link for more information.

Yorktown boys and girls Ultimate Frisbee teams play in the Fall season (which for 2020-21 will be from February-April). Ultimate was developed in 1968 by a group of students at Columbia H.S. in Maplewood, NJ. Although Ultimate resembles many traditional sports in its athletic requirements, it is unlike most sports due to its focus on self-officiating, even at the highest levels of competition. This concept, called Spirit of the Game, is integrated into the basic philosophy of the sport, written into the rules, and practiced at all levels of the game from local leagues to the World Games.

Sign up for Team App YHS – Ultimate (Links to an external site.) for information on the season when it becomes available.
