TRANSITION TO IN-PERSON LEARNING
Please continue to monitor the APS Transition to In-Person Learning Website and Dr. Duran’s School Board Meeting Updates for the latest information related to our current status and return to school plans. While no date has been announced yet for students to return, this week teachers will prepare for the hybrid model and participate in professional development on delivering instruction to multiple groups concurrently. The schedule for next week is as follows:
- Thu, Feb. 4 and Fri, Feb. 5 are asynchronous days for secondary students (grades 6-12)
- Monday, Feb. 8th is an “early release” day for teachers. Teachers will have professional learning time from 1:00-3:30 p.m. Office hours during that time may be rescheduled by teachers.
On Thursday, February 4th, and Friday, February 5th, teachers will assign no more than 60 minutes of asynchronous work per block class and 30 minutes of asynchronous work for 3rd period daily. Students will need to complete the assigned work during the appropriate school day. Teachers will take attendance by 4:00 p.m. each day based on evidence of student completion of assignments, such as exit tickets, assignments submitted in Canvas, discussion board submissions, etc. There will be no office hours or Patriot Period on those days. Counselors will be holding office hours to assist students with general Naviance Course Planning questions. Links will be provided through Canvas and Naviance.
Additionally, all Level 1 students currently reporting to Yorktown will not report to school and will be fully virtual and asynchronous on Thursday, February 4th, and Friday, February 5th.
Town Halls and Orientations for Hybrid Return to School
Once APS announces dates for returning to school, we will let you know when we will hold Family Town Hall Meetings and Student Orientations to prepare for students returning to the building for the Hybrid model.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH EVENTS
- An all-school Black History Month assembly will be held on Friday, February 26th, during 3rd period. All students and staff will join a Teams Live event to watch a short video about housing segregation in Arlington and its legacy. Then, several members of the community will join us to share their personal experiences around segregation in Arlington. Students will be asked to complete an exit ticket, which teachers may choose to use as an assignment or for discussion. If you wish to extend the learning beyond the assembly, here is the video Race and Housing in Arlington and other Resources.
- On February 8th and February 22, we will share information about Black History Month, important figures in Black History, and information about the assembly on Friday 2/26.
- Sister Circle started an art project last year, which was disrupted by Covid-19. They are working to finish the project now and hope to have their piece, honoring some of the lives lost to police brutality, ready for display this year.
- The Yorktown PTA is planning to host a screening of the film Selma in February. Details to follow.
EQUITY TEAM UPDATE
Yorktown’s Equity Team, with members representing staff, students and parents, has been meeting each month since August. We started by creating a common vision and mission for the work of the Equity Team.
We now have organized into three committees: Curriculum, Instruction and Representation; School Culture and Community Building; and YHS Structures – Access and Opportunities. Some of the work being done currently includes developing a brief survey to collect data on equity knowledge and skills to inform the effectiveness of our equity work, creating an “Introduction to Equity” lesson for Patriot Period classes, and crafting a checklist that staff can use to review curriculum materials.
There is also a subcommittee tasked with our implementation of No Place for Hate activities, an APS-wide initiative (more details to be sent in a separate SchoolTalk). Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer, Arron Gregory, has called on all schools and APS departments to form Equity Teams this year, and representatives from each team meet on a monthly basis to discuss the efforts in our schools and as a school system. All staff received training in October from the Equity Literacy Institute, and non-staff members serving on the Equity Teams have been given free access to training as well.

Academic Planning for the 2021-22 School Year
Student course selection for the 2021-2022 school year has begun. All students have been added to the YHS Academic Planning Canvas course and can review course information, graduation requirements and the County Program of Studies (POS). Students are entering their requests through Naviance, and should have them entered by Friday, February 19th. The link to the Program of Studies can be reached by this link POS 2021-22. We encourage you to review the Canvas course with your child and discuss their interests, passions, and college or career goals as they make their course selections.
Academic Planning Parent Presentations
Counselors have planned two evening presentations for parents regarding Academic Planning. Each presentation is brief (30 minutes) and will cover graduation requirements and a “how to” overview for the Naviance Course Request Process. Please review all of the Academic Planning information in the YHS Academic Planning Canvas course with your student prior to the presentation so we can answer your questions! Parents will be able to submit questions during the event, and we will record the meetings (recordings will also be available via the links below).
*Please note: Since counselors are divided into teams for 9th/11th grade and 10th/12th grade, we have organized the meetings accordingly.
