Dear Yorktown Parents and Students,
Thanks for another great week at Yorktown! Students are enjoying being back at school and are doing a great job being safe. Thank you for helping us stay open and in-person. Highlights from the week include our Student Club Fair on Wednesday with 35 clubs sharing information and recruiting new members. We also look forward to seeing you virtually for Back to School Night next Wednesday, September 22!

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT YORKTOWN
Congratulations National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists
The National Merit Scholarship Program announced that 20 Arlington students are semifinalists in the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship Competition on Sept. 15. Semifinalists are the highest scoring entrants in each state and represent less than one percent of the nation’s seniors. Congratulations to Yorktown’s Lillian Keith, Nathan Pease and Julia Santos. Back To School Night Wednesday, September 22nd @ 7:00 p.m.
This year, Back to School Night will be held virtually on MS Teams on Wednesday, September 22nd, 2021, from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. By Monday, we will send personalized emails with links to your child’s teachers’ virtual classrooms for the night, along with more detailed information.
Patriot Period Advisory
During advisory on Monday 9/20, seniors will participate in Microsoft Teams meetings with their counselor to review the college application process and have an opportunity to ask any follow-up questions from the information sessions they have been attending this week. Students in grades 9-11 will begin work on goal setting and starting their own personal vision board. SGA Barbeque Today!
The SGA Welcome-Back-BBQ will be held on Friday, September 17th prior to the home football game. The BBQ will begin at 6 PM and will be held on the outside basketball courts. This event is free to YHS students.
Late Bus Information
Late buses are running after school on regular school days, Monday-Thursday at 4:45 pm and 6:45 pm. The route schedules for late buses are posted in the cafeteria by Door 12 and on the Activities Office bulletin board.
First Virtual Coffee with the CounselorsOn October 5th, counselors will host the first in a series of “Coffees with the Counselors” from 8:30am-9:00am. These events will be virtual and hosted on Microsoft Teams. Our first session will introduce the counselors and the student support team at Yorktown. College Planning Student Help Sessions: To follow up on last week’s Senior College Night and this week’s counselor meetings with 12th grade English classes; The counseling department will have walk-in help sessions for 12th grade students during all lunch periods every Tuesday this Fall. Additional sessions and special focus workshops will be announced through Naviance. Seniors should check their email and Naviance accounts regularly. All sessions are held in the Office of College and Career Services, Room 107 (next to the counseling office). Additionally, Career and College planning resources can be found on the Counseling website https://yhs.apsva.us/counseling/
College Visits for Seniors: College visits with admission representatives will occur over the next several months. Seniors can find dates, time, location; and sign up in their Naviance account > College Visits. The meetings will be virtually or on-site at Yorktown. All virtual meetings will occur after school. Seniors need to sign up, and discuss with their teacher, in advance, the class time they will miss. Students are responsible for any missed work and/or homework assigned.
Mental Health Speaker Ross Szabo Patriot Period & Parent Presentations, September 27th
During Patriot Period Advisory, students will hear from Ross Szabo, Wellness Director at Geffen Academy at UCLA. Mr. Szabo is currently working on changing the way students learn about their mental health in grades 6-12. His company, Human Power Project has also developed a curriculum used by over 250,000 people of all ages, and will be used as one of our resources during Patriot Period Advisory.

Hispanic Heritage Month
This week marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, a national celebration of the history and culture of the U.S. Latino and Hispanic communities. The month commemorates how these communities have influenced and contributed to American society. There will be information celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month around the building and on our Dailies. We will also be recognizing YHS staff members who identify as Hispanic or Latina/o/x; read about staff members who chose to participate on the ROCS Recognition Bulletin Board in the main hallway. PSAT Wednesday, October 13th, 2021
Students in grades 10 and 11 will take the PSAT on Wednesday, October 13th at Yorktown High School. Students in Grades 9 and 12 do not have to report to school. Additional information forthcoming.
9th Grade Class of 2025 Elections
Class of 2025 officer elections will take place on September 22 & September 23 via Google Forms. Students in the class of 2025 can look for this information on the YHS Activities Canvas Page under Class of 2025. Home Game Highlights
Athletic event schedules can be found on the Yorktown Sports website. All events are free except Football and Field Hockey games. Tickets for these events may be purchased at the gate with cash or through GoFan.co (not .com) or the GoFan mobile app (used by the Virginia High School League for state playoff games).

Clubs are starting to have informational meetings and now is the time to get involved. Students are enrolled in the Canvas Activities Course which has club descriptions and sponsors as well as club canvas pages. Parents can access club offerings on the website. Many clubs announce introductory meetings via the Dailies which air Tuesday-Friday during Patriot Period, and can be found here.
Students who completed registration after August 10, 2021, will receive their official APS issued MacBook Airs in the coming weeks. Parents, guardians, and teachers of these students have received a direct email from Mr. Wightman with the students’ updated password. These were changed so Information Services can set up a new device for them. Students are always welcome to reach out to Mr. Wightman with any questions. Once the new devices are set up, Mr. Wightman will reach out to students via their teachers. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
