September 23, 2022 YHS School Talk

Dear Yorktown Families,

It was great seeing many of you on Wednesday during our Back to School Night! I hope you enjoyed meeting teachers, learning about your child’s classes, and navigating our wonderful building. This event was just one of the many ways to connect with teachers and staff. We encourage you, and especially your children, to communicate with teachers, counselors, and staff as needed throughout the year.

As we look forward to the next few weeks, there are several important dates and events coming up. Monday, there is no school due to Rosh Hashanah, celebrating the Jewish New Year, from sundown Sunday, September 25th to sundown Tuesday, September 27th. Shanah tovah to those who celebrate!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Dr. Kevin Clark, Principal

APS Message on Proposed VA Model Policies

On Monday, Dr. Durán and the APS School Board released a joint statement to affirm support for our LGBTQIA+ students in response to last Friday’s release of proposed guidelines for Virginia schools affecting transgender students. It is important to know that the proposed guidance is a draft, subject to public comment prior to approval. Make your voice heard on this issue! The 30-day comment period opens Mon, Sept. 26 on the Virginia Regulatory Town Hall website.

Policy J-2 Student Equal Educational Opportunities/Nondiscrimination and Policy Implementation Procedure J-2 PIP-2 Transgender Students which were adopted in 2019, following extensive community input, will remain in effect. APS and Yorktown will continue to treat all students with dignity and respect by standing strong in adhering to our values and practices that ensure equal educational opportunities.

Patriot Period and Advisory

Advisory meetings are on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Advisors will help students create academic and personal goals for the first quarter and begin to meet one on one with students for quick academic check-in meetings. Advisors may ask students to review grades and upcoming assignments, and then create an action plan for the following week. Students can also visit teachers, counselors, or work with peers on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

This week:

  • Tuesday 9/27: students will participate in goal-setting reflection circles
  • Thursday 9/29: academic check-ins

 PSAT Day Wednesday, October 12th

On Wednesday, October 12th, all 10th and 11th grade students have the opportunity to take the PSAT/NMSQT at school. 9th and 12th grade students will have an asynchronous virtual day with up to 20 minutes of work per class assigned through Canvas. This will be an early release day, and students will be released at 12:35. Extended time testers will be released at 3:10.

Attendance Notifications and Follow-up

Consistent attendance in class is a key factor in a student’s academic success. Now that schedules are solidified, we are beginning to run reports regarding student attendance. If your child has accumulated three or more unverified absences in a class period or three or more tardies, you will receive an email in the next week so that you are aware of the concern in addition to the phone calls you receive if they are absent.  We appreciate your partnership in ensuring that your child is attending each of their classes daily and on time.

If you receive one of these emails, contact information will be included if corrections need to be made. Starting next week, students may be assigned a lunch detention for excessive tardies or after school detention for unverified absences. You will be notified when your child is assigned an after school detention. Please reach out to your child’s counselor or assistant principal if you have any questions or concerns in regards to your child’s attendance.
