Dear Patriot Families,

This week, 11th and 12th grade students heard substance abuse prevention presentations from Arise and Flourish. Presenters shared personal stories of addiction and recovery and answered questions from students. This is an opportunity for parents or guardians to have open discussions with your children about the dangers of substance use, protective factors, and how to make safe choices. It takes a community approach to promote safe choices and prevent substance abuse. Together we can make a difference!

We also had a successful start to our Spring sports and want to thank our coaches and everyone who tried out. We look forward to cheering on our spring teams!

Have a great weekend.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT YORKTOWN

Latin Competition

Seven Latin students are competing on a team in the Latin League, a national tournament measuring students’ collective knowledge of Latin and the ancient Greco-Roman world. Each month they competed in a timed 100 question test against another school. Yorktown is 5-0 in head-to-head competition, won the Atlantic II competition, and advanced to compete in the super-regional tournament in March.

Congratulations to Ian Cochran, James Gallagher, Taeryn Graham, Spencer Johnson, Hunter Schmelling, Laura Su, and Lynx Sword! Good luck to them in regionals!

Athletics Postseason Tournament Action

Good luck to all the individuals and teams participating in the ongoing district, regional and state tournaments. State gymnastics and wrestling are tomorrow with state swim/dive and state track early next week.  Yorktown has representatives in each of these tournaments. Congratulations to the basketball teams who advanced to the regional tournament and to Charlotte Bowman who represented Yorktown with a third-place finish in the girls state wrestling tournament.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION CORNER

Women’s History Month

March is Women’s History Month!  The month is set aside to honor women’s contributions in American history. Women’s History Month began as a local celebration in Santa Rosa, California. The Education Task Force of the Sonoma County (California) Commission on the Status of Women planned and executed a “Women’s History Week” celebration in 1978. The movement spread across the country as other communities initiated their own celebrations. In 1980, a consortium of women’s groups and historians successfully lobbied for national recognition. In March 1987, Congress passed a law designating March as “Women’s History Month.” The National Women’s History Alliance selects and publishes the yearly theme. The theme for Women’s History Month 2025 is “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations.”

Dig into the following resources during Women’s History Month and year-round:

National Women’s Hall of FameThe National Women’s Hall of Fame celebrates the achievements of women who changed/are changing the world. The Hall elevates women’s voices, equips and empowers changemakers, and advances gender equity through action, education, and storytelling.

New York Historical Society Center for Women’s HistoryThe Center for Women’s History at the New York Historical Society explores the lives of a wide range of notable women in American history from different cultures, sexualities, classes, and races.

Becoming Visible: Bringing American Women’s History into FocusThis digital exhibit presents the stories of five women whose stories have been excluded, erased, obscured, forgotten, and almost lost.

Culture & Climate Listening Sessions

The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will be conducting listening sessions with students and staff at Yorktown beginning in March.  The purpose of the sessions is to get a sense of the culture and climate at YHS from the perspective of these stakeholders.  Participation is voluntary and staff and students may share as much or as little as they like.  Identifying information, if provided, will not be shared. Students may indicate their interest to participate here (they will be provided with passes for a specific 15-30 minute block of time).

Please direct any questions or concerns to DEI Coordinator Ackesha Patrick at [email protected].

ACTIVITIES UPDATES

Club of the Week: Girls in Sports Club

The Girls in Sports club aims to empower underprivileged girls through sports. The club hopes to raise awareness in the YHS community to specific issues and biases facing girls by building confidence through sports.  The club aims to hold fundraisers for making donations to support girls in need, to spread awareness, and to volunteer in whatever ways are possible. See Ms. Lucas for more information.

Outdoor Track Begins March 3

Outdoor track is the only remaining sport available for students to join for this spring.  Practices begin Monday, March 3 at 3:30 pm at the track.  Students may join until Friday, March 7.  Students must register online in order to participate and the signed doctor’s page must be dated after May 1, 2024 to participate in fall sports tryouts.  Students and parents must also sign up for Team App for track/cross country and complete the team specific registration.

Spring Turf Sports to Stream on NFHS

After many years of High Definition handheld streaming thanks to the Yorktown Athletic Boosters, we will transition to the automated NFHS Network for all stadium field sports this spring.  Lacrosse and soccer games will be available on the NFHS Network with a subscription.  The subscription to the network allows online access to home volleyball and basketball games as well as most gym and field events in Fairfax County and around the country, including playoff games.

Looking Ahead – Fall 2025 Sports

For planning purposes, Fall sports will begin as early as July 31 with most beginning on August 4. Check Team App or the website for more information.

Please note, that playing a high school fall sport requires a commitment to be present for the duration of tryouts and daily practices thereafter. Families are advised that vacations planned after the start of fall sports will not be considered favorably during the tryout process because there is limited practice time to build a team prior to the start of scrimmages and games in mid to late August.
