DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION CORNER

Ramadan

Ramadan is a holy month of fasting, introspection and prayer for Muslims, the followers of Islam. Fasting is one of the five fundamental principles of Islam. Each day during Ramadan, Muslims do not eat or drink from dawn to sunset.  The fast is not just about food or drink; it is also a time for spiritual growth, kindness, and self-discipline.

Muslims break their daily fasts by sharing meals with family and friends, and the end of Ramadan is celebrated with a three-day festival known as Eid al-Fitr, one of Islam’s major holidays. This year, Eid al-Fitr begins on either Sunday March 30 or Monday March 31, 2025. Find more information about Ramadan here.

APS to Provide Meals for Students Observing Ramadan

During the month of March, Food and Nutrition Services will be offering take-home meals for students who observe fasting during Ramadan through a Virginia Department of Education initiative. Meal kits will consist of one breakfast and lunch.

  • Parents/Guardians must fill out this form for your child to pick up these meals.
  • Student Pick-up: Students can pick up one breakfast and one lunch from the cafeteria at the end of the school day.
  • Who is eligible for the meals? Any student who is fasting can pick up meals. If a student eats lunch or breakfast at school, they can’t pick up a meal that day. Only students can pick up the meal kits.
  • When? These meal kits are only available from Feb. 28-March 28 at the end of the school day.

Culture & Climate Listening Sessions

The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will be conducting listening sessions with students and staff at Yorktown beginning in March. The purpose of the sessions is to get a sense of the culture and climate at YHS from the perspective of these stakeholders.  Participation is voluntary and staff and students may share as much or as little as they like.  Identifying information, if provided, will not be shared.  Students may indicate their interest to participate here.

Please direct any questions or concerns to DEI Coordinator Ackesha Patrick at [email protected].

ACTIVITIES UPDATES

Club of the Week: Women in STEM Club

The Women in STEM club focuses on creating a more inclusive environment for girls at Yorktown who are interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The club discusses different ways women are involved in STEM fields and inspires girls at Yorktown to explore areas of interest and learn about possible career paths. Through various activities – such as female guest speakers, science experiments, having an article of the day about a woman in STEM, and other related activities – the club aims to engage and empower girls to participate in STEM. The Women in STEM club works collaboratively with our current STEM club to promote STEM throughout our student body.  Even though it is a club for girls interested in STEM, boys may participate if they wish to be advocates and allies for women. See Ms. Wright for more information.

Intramural Futsol and Boys Volleyball

Spring intramurals are starting up and we will be offering futsol and boys volleyball.  Futsal will be on Tuesdays, starting March 18 from 3:20-4:45 pm in the main gym – all are welcome, no physical needed.  Boys volleyball will be on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:20-4:45 pm, starting Wednesday, March 12.  Boys volleyball is open to those with experience and students who are interested in learning.  We hope to have two round-robin tournaments with the other Arlington schools which, depending on the number of students attending boys volleyball intramurals, might have a team roster with limited participants.

Looking Ahead – Fall 2025 Sports

For planning purposes, Fall sports will begin as early as July 31 with most beginning on August 4. Check Team App or the website for more information.

Please note, that playing a high school fall sport requires a commitment to be present for the duration of tryouts and daily practices thereafter. Families are advised that vacations planned after the start of fall sports will not be considered favorably during the tryout process because there is limited practice time to build a team prior to the start of scrimmages and games in mid to late August.
