Yorktown publications are offered as full year/one credit electives. They offer students the opportunity to express their voice on topics relevant to their lives and to reach others. Participation in publications improves creative thinking, communication and literacy skills. Students practice generating ideas, researching, writing, proof-reading and editing. Mastering these skills leads to a sense of achievement and stronger self-esteem.
Broadcast Journalism

Broadcast, known as TV Studio, is a full year/one credit elective English Language Arts course. TV Studio is open to grades 9-12. To enroll, students must have a teacher recommendation plus an interview with the instructor. Students explore methods and techniques for reporting, producing, and delivering news and news programs via radio, television and video/film media. Students have hands-on experience of the principles of broadcast technology; broadcast reporting; on- and off-camera and microphone procedures and techniques; program, sound, and video/film editing; and professional standards and ethics.

Literary Magazine
Literary Magazine (“Lit Mag”) is a full year/one credit elective English Language Arts course. Students enrolled in Literary Magazine spend half their time producing a magazine of the creative arts and half their time writing poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. The class encourages all Yorktown students to submit their best writing, photography, and artwork. Literary Magazine students select the best work and produce the magazine. The class supports the arts at Yorktown in varying ways each year.

Pre-Order the 2022-2023 Yorktown Lit Mag!
This year’s magazine is titled A Public Spectacle and costs $18. Use the link above to pre-order your copy, which showcases art, photography, and creative writing from the Yorktown student body. Copies will be distributed in June through your English classes so be sure to include your English teacher’s name in the order form.
Newspaper – The Sentry
Newspaper is a full year/one credit elective English Language Arts course. Students enrolled in the newspaper class research, interview, write, edit, and take photographs for the online version of The Sentry each school year. Newspaper staff selection is based on writing samples, receipt of an application, and English or Journalism teacher recommendations. Reliability is a must! Students interested in being on the staff should pay close attention to application deadlines. The Sentry is financed by contributions, subscriptions, advertising and fundraising.

Yearbook – The Patriot
Yearbook is a full year/one credit English course. Enrollment is open to all grade levels, including rising Freshmen. To be considered for our Yearbook staff, students will need to complete an application form which can be found here: 2023-2024 Yearbook Application.
Our Yearbook is entitled The Patriot. It seeks to celebrate our Patriot Nation through journalism, document design, and photography. The work of compiling, designing, and editing The Patriot takes is a year-long effort, with publication at the end of May.
Purchasing Information
Yearbooks can be purchased from our publisher, Herff Jones. You can visit Herff Jones or, students can purchase through Yorktown’s Website. If cash or check is the preferred method of payment, they will need to be left for Mr. Troy Olsen via the front office at Yorktown, or by dropping it off in room 264. Checks must be payable to Yorktown High School with the student’s first and last name listed on the “notes” line of the check.
