About the Department

The Yorktown High School Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) Department equips students with essential life skills and career readiness through practical, hands-on learning. Courses like Child Development prepare students for future family life and early childhood careers, emphasizing practical application with young children and teaching Workplace Readiness Skills. The curriculum also includes Nutrition and Food, focusing on healthy choices and culinary skills, and Interior Design alongside Fashion Design, exploring design principles for housing, interiors, and apparel. Additionally, a specialized course invites seniors to examine the teaching profession, encouraging careers in education or informed advocacy for schooling.

The Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow (VTfT) program is a state-approved initiative by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) designed to encourage high school students to explore and pursue careers in education. It primarily targets juniors and seniors who are interested in teaching
