Welcome to Yorktown High School’s English Department


The English Department at Yorktown High School focuses on developing strong student proficiency in language, composition, literature, and communication over four required years of study. The curriculum offers academic rigor through Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses, including AP English Literature, as well as college-credit opportunities. Additionally, the department expands student skills through practical electives such as Broadcast Journalism (TV Studio), Creative Writing, and Drama.

Graduation Requirements

Students need to complete 4 credits of English to graduate.

9th Grade students will take English on a block schedule with Social Studies: English 9 and World History II (1500AD-Present).  All AP courses require a teacher signature on the CRF which serves as a recommendation. For additional information or questions you may have, consult:

Broadcast Journalism

Broadcast, known as TV Studio, is a full year/one credit elective English Language Arts course. TV Studio is open to grades 9-12. To enroll, students must have a teacher recommendation plus an interview with the instructor. Students explore methods and techniques for reporting, producing, and delivering news and news programs via radio, television and video/film media. Students have hands-on experience of the principles of broadcast technology; broadcast reporting; on- and off-camera and microphone procedures and techniques; program, sound, and video/film editing; and professional standards and ethics.Need something announced on the Dailies??? Ethan Davis

Ethan Davis is in his tenth year of teaching with Arlington Public Schools. He holds a B.A. in English Teaching from Brigham Young University, an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in TESOL from Virginia Tech, and a Master of Library and Information Studies from the University of Alabama. This is his fourth year at Yorktown, where he teaches English 9 and English 10 for English Learners and co-teaches General Education English 10.

Kelly Dillon

I have taught at Yorktown since 2014. I teach four sections of English 9 Intensified and one section of Literary Magazine. My qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Missouri and a Master’s degree in Secondary Education from Truman State University. In 2021 I earned National Board Certification. As a teacher, I strive to be rigorous and helpful. No matter where you are in your reading and writing journey, my goal is to help you grow stronger, more confident, more skilled. Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my husband, daughter, and dog. My hobbies include playing guitar, cooking, biking, and rock climbing.

Aidan Leddy's courses at Yorktown are 11th and 12th grade English. He has been an English teacher since 2015, first at Indian River High School in Delaware, then at Yorktown since 2021. You can find him in Room 347.
