Special Education

Welcome to the Yorktown High School Special Education Department!

The Special Education Department at Yorktown High School is committed to providing individualized support that empowers students with disabilities to achieve academic excellence and personal growth. In alignment with Arlington Public Schools’ broader commitment to equity and inclusion, the department works to ensure all students are valued, supported, and challenged. This involves offering a range of services and accommodations tailored to student needs, fostering an inclusive environment, and collaborating closely with students, families, and staff to support progress and prepare students for success beyond high school.

Specialized Programs

Yorktown High School offers specialized programs for students with diverse learning needs, including the Functional Life Skills program, the Interlude program, and support for students on the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The Functional Life Skills program focuses on developing academic, adaptive, and independent living skills to prepare students for greater independence, including hands-on vocational experiences and community-based internships. The Interlude program is an intensive alternative education option designed for students facing significant emotional and behavioral challenges that impact their academic and social functioning, providing a structured, therapeutic environment with individualized academic support. Finally, Yorktown supports students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)through specialized instruction and programs (like APS’s Multi-Intervention Program for Students with Autism – MIPA, and Secondary Program for Students with Autism – SPSA) that aim to improve communication, social skills, and independent life skills within the least restrictive environment, often with individualized support within the school building.
