WHAT’S HAPPENING AT YORKTOWN

Homecoming Dance Ticket Information

The last time to purchase Homecoming tickets in person is 3:10-3:30 pm on Friday afternoon in the Activities Office.  This includes in-person guest ticket purchases.  No physical tickets will be sold in person after 3:30 pm on Friday.

Online tickets will remain available for purchase until 3 pm on Saturday, October 11 for Yorktown students.  Guest passes must be turned in/emailed to Mr. Krulfeld by Friday night at 10 pm to receive a code to purchase the guest ticket online.  Guest codes will not be distributed after 10 pm on Friday.

Any purchases which occur after Friday afternoon online will not have technical support from YHS staff so it is strongly suggested all purchases take place before 10 pm Friday.

Please plan ahead. These events require significant planning for the Student Government Association, staff and volunteers. There is no mechanism for last minute sales for this optional event – please plan ahead and adhere to the deadlines.

COUNSELING CORNER

Advisory Information

Tuesday, October 14: All Grades: Academic Check Ins12th Grade: Senior Help Sessions with counseling staffSigns Of Suicide Lessons for 10th GradersThis year school staff are working to teach students about mental health and how to seek help if they are worried about themselves or a friend. We are using a program called SOS Signs of Suicide. The program teaches students about this difficult topic and encourages them to seek help.

SOS has been used by thousands of schools for over 20 years. Studies have shown that it effectively teaches students about depression and suicide while reducing the number of students’ self-reported suicide attempts.

Through the program, students learn:

  • that depression is treatable, so they are encouraged to seek help
  • how to identify depression and potential suicide risk in themselves or a friend
  • to ACT (Acknowledge, Care and Tell a trusted adult) if concerned about themselves or a friend
  • who they can turn to at school for help, if they need it

On October 16th and 17th, school counselors and student services team staff will visit 10th grade English classes to facilitate this year’s SOS lesson and conversation. Students will watch age-appropriate video clips and participate in a guided discussion about depression, suicide, and what to do if they are concerned about a friend. Following the video, students will complete a brief depression screening tool. This tool cannot provide a diagnosis of depression but does indicate whether a young person should be referred for evaluation by a mental health professional.

At the end of class, students will complete an exit slip which asks whether they would like to talk to an adult about any concerns. School staff will conduct brief meetings with any student asking to talk.

We encourage you to visit www.sossignsofsuicide.org/parent for information on warning signs for youth suicide, useful resources, and some of the key messages students will learn.

If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s participation in this program please contact your child’s school counselor. If you would like to opt your student out of participating, please use this link to the SOS Opt-Out form.

ACTIVITIES UPDATES

Club of the Week – Latinas Leading Tomorrow

The YHS Club of the Week is Latinas Leading Tomorrow (LLT). Latinas Leading Tomorrow is a two-tiered program that uses a club format to address the needs of high school Latina students.  LLT endorses academic excellence, personal responsibility, trust among its members, and Latina empowerment. We provide a leadership skills component, career exploration, college preparation, and mentoring in a supportive environment.  LLT promotes college as the goal among its students while targeting to decrease teen pregnancy rates and dropout rates.  The club meets weekly and aims to build on the strengths of students.  Members in the club are expected to be role models in the school and community and to actively participate in the club’s activities.  See Dr. Hyder for more information.
