October 31, 2024 Newsletter

Dear Patriot Families,

Happy Halloween! We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Halloween tonight. A reminder that Friday, November 1st is a school holiday for Diwali. Students are also off on Monday November 4th (staff professional learning), and Tuesday, November 5th (grade preparation), and offices will be closed. Also, today marks the end of the first quarter.

As we approach Tuesday’s election, we want to encourage students to be respectful of others no matter the outcome. We foster a safe and respectful learning environment for all students. The Counseling Team will be available for students who may need support next week.

We also want to share out the Standard Response Protocol APS uses for emergency situations. This week’s “Hold” means “In Your Room or Area” and is the protocol used when hallways need to be kept clear of occupants. We will be reviewing our morning entry procedures and updating safety protocols. We will share any updates in the next few weeks.

Have a great weekend!

Dr. Kevin Clark, Principal

COUNSELING CORNER

Advisory Information

This year, our staff is implementing the RULER curriculum during advisory period. RULER helps students to learn about and manage their emotions. This is important for success in nearly every aspect of our lives—for attention, memory, and learning, for making and keeping friends, for healthy decision-making, and for our overall well being. You can learn more about RULER and why emotions matter in this brochure. There is no advisory lesson next week since students do not have school on Tuesday.  Thursday will be academic check-ins and students have the option to see teachers if they have a pass.

End Of 1st Quarter

This is a reminder that the 1st quarter, or marking period 1, has ended.  Teachers are working on submitting their quarter grades, and families will be able to see Report Cards, attached to “student” in Synergy, starting at 10am, Thursday, November 14th.

Signs of Suicide (SOS) for 10th Graders

This year student services staff are working to teach students about mental health and how to seek help if they are worried about themselves or a friend. We are using a program called SOS, or Signs of Suicide. The program teaches students about this difficult topic and encourages them to seek help.

Through the program, students learn:

  • that depression is treatable, so they are encouraged to seek help
  • how to identify depression and potential suicide risk in themselves or a friend
  • to ACT (Acknowledge, Care, and Tell a trusted adult) if concerned about themselves or a friend
  • who they can turn to at school for help

On November 12 & 13 during English classes, 10th grade students will watch age-appropriate video clips and participate in a guided discussion about depression, suicide, and what to do if they are concerned about a friend. If you do NOT wish for your child to participate in this program (10th grade families only) please complete this SOS Opt-Out form.

It’s College Application Season

Counselors are working diligently to help students with their post-secondary plans.  This includes making sure recommendation letters are submitted to colleges by the required deadlines.  We ask for some grace and your patience as counselors make sure all deadlines are met.
