Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) Verified Credit Requirements
Welcome to Arlington Public Schools and Yorktown High School! As the School Testing Coordinator, Ms. Wendy Boone will be working with you to ensure your child has every opportunity to receive the required verified credits the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) requires for graduating from a Virginia public school. The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) requires all graduates receiving a Standard Diploma or Advanced Diploma to earn both course credit and verified SOL credit. Verified SOL credits are credits awarded by the State when a student has successfully passed both the course and the State end-of-course SOL. Standards of Learning end-of -course tests are given for Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Earth Space Science, Biology, Chemistry, World History I, World History II, World Geography, United States and Virginia History, English 11 Reading and Writing.
Here is an explanation of the SOL requirements:
Students who transfer… | Standard Diploma | Advanced Diploma |
At the beginning of or during Grade 9 | Standard VDOE requirements apply | Standard VDOE requirements apply |
At the beginning of or during Grade 10 | 4 verified credits: 1 English 1 Math 1 Science 1 History |
6 verified credits: 2 English 1 Math 1 Science 1 History 1 other |
At the beginning of or during Grade 11 | 4 verified credits: 1 English 1 Math 1 Science 1 History |
6 verified credits: 2 English 1 Math 1 Science 1 History 1 other |
At the beginning of or during Grade 12 | 2 verified credits: 1 English 1 other |
4 verified credits: 1 English 3 other |
The State establishes specific times when the assessments can be administered and Ms. Boone will contact your child during these windows of time. If you are transferring from another State which administers State-wide end-of-course assessments, we might be able to substitute those results for some of the VDOE required verified credits. Please provide a copy of the test report to see if we can use it as a verified credit. Here is a link to VDOE’s page on transfer requirements.
